2011 Book List

It has been exciting to put together this list of books I hope to read this year, and to start noting down ideas for next year as well. Underlined items have been completed. The list is still in progress and I anticipate it will be throughout the year. Some of these titles are on our shelves and others still need to be obtained. I hope that 2011 will be the year to read books I have had on my mind for years!

Fiction

The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan

The Heart of Darkness and The Secret Sharer by Joseph Conrad - would like children to read it as teens, as exploration of human depravity and racism (opportunities to discuss redemption, value of every human life, and duty toward the needy).

That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis

Non-fiction

Biography, Autobiography and History

Imprisoned in Iran: Love's Victory over Fear by Dan Baumann

J. Hudson Taylor: A Man in Christ by Roger Steer

The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

Undaunted Courage: Meriwether, Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West by Stephen E. Ambrose

Relationship With God

The God Who Loves by John McArthur  - I only partially read this as I found it hard going and wasn't gaining a lot from it. I skimmed the whole book.

The Deeper Christian Life by Andrew Murray

Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

The Experience that Counts by Jonathan Edwards

Radical Womanhood by Carolyn McCulley

The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn

Family and Home Life

Adopt International by O. Robin Sweet and Patty Bryan

Leading Little Ones to God by Marian Schoolland

The Billings Method: Using the Body's Natural Signal of Fertility to Achieve or Avoid Conception by Evelyn Billings

Tarts with tops on: or how to make the perfect pie  by Tamasin Day-Lewis

On Becoming Baby Wise by Gary Ezzo I skim read this in one evening just to clarify my understanding of some aspects of the Baby Wise perspective on sleep and waking. This gave me some ideas about how long to expect Mercy to nap for in the day, and how to be flexible with my schedule.

The Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning by Karen Andreola is a wonderful read! Full of sweet inspiration!

I also want to read about toilet training and "elimination communication" - book recommendations are welcome!

Mission

Ministries of Mercy: Lessons from the Jericho Road by Timothy J. Keller

Promoting the Gospel by John Dickson

Prayers and Poems

The Valley of Vision: A collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions

The Poems of Banjo Patterson

Next year?

The Valley of Vision: A collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions
 Screwtape Letters
Miracles
Prayer: Letters to Malcolm
The Two Sons by John McArthur
Stepping Heavenward
