Engagement party - take 2

One benefit to Dave and I living in different states is that we could have two engagement parties! Our party in Melbourne also celebrated Dave's 30th birthday.

At the party, John Dekker quickly found the most beautiful company in the room . . .

It was great to have one of "my" friends at the party, a friend I knew before meeting Dave. It is great to meet Dave's Melbourne friends, and they are all very friendly, but I don't know any of them well yet.

We had a small bonfire, which stayed alive for a long time considering the fact that we had little to put on it! We enjoyed sitting around the fire.

To finish up the evening, we opened presents with some of our guests. Present opening is ever so much more fun when there are people to share it with! We had different guests arriving at different times throughout the evening, and we appreciated the fact that so many came to celebrate with us.

Dave's home

I enjoyed spending several days at Dave's home last weekend. It looks very run down on the outside, but it is quite cosy within! Dave has enjoyed renting this property because of its beautiful rural location. It also has very low rent, which is a bonus!

We spent some lovely time on the front porch, reading Lord of the Rings and discussing everything financial from how many toys children should be given to whether or not to take out a loan for a home and how much debt for a home would be too much. We really want to always maintain a grateful attitude for what God has given, rather than overcommiting outselves and then feeling stretched and complaining that we "can't afford" things.

I was blessed to stay with a friend of Dave's a few minutes drive away. She was an example of hospitality. When I arrived, there were lots of chocolates on the towel near my bed, as well as hand cream, soap and shower gel. This was a lovely surprise! She also took the trouble to find out that I liked fruit, and bought me some even though she doesn't like it. I love it when I stay at people's houses and gain more tips for hospitality through observing their actions!

I hope to post more pictures of my time in Melbourne soon.

Around the Internet

My friend Felicity has a new blog, In God's Strength. Her goal of cultivating thankfulness through her blogging is a good one, and her recent posts reflect this aim.

I haven't been able to visit Kimi's blog for a long time, and when I visited today I was sorry to read that she is still enduring a lot of sickness. In her most recent post, Humility through illness, Kimi shares this about her illness: "It has been a constant reminder of my own weaknesses and how much I need God and other's help. If I had the perfect picture home, kept up on everything all the time, and was able to meet everyone's needs constantly, I could feel like I had "made it" and get prideful about myself. Sometimes you see this tendency in some of our Christian leaders-the desire to paint the picture perfect family. This is dangerous ground to be on and will more tend to discourage instead of encourage others. I personally find that I am most meaningfully encouraged by leaders who share God's grace and abundance to them through their own weaknesses". I recommend reading the whole post.

My friend Mike is aiming focus on encouragement through his blog. I appreciated his recent post on our pastor Mike and his wife Nikki . He explains the encouragement they have brought to his life. I have also been encouraged by their lives, especially Mike's humility in admitting where things have gone wrong in the past.

Susan has written a response to an article that was negative about marriage. "Silly Me" explores the self centeredness of many reasons why people avoid marriage, and offers "10 fascinating benefits to being married" as a response. I have noticed that many reasons Christians give for why they are happy to remain single are also self centered. So are most of the things Christians say to people who are not happy about being single. For example, "you have so much more time and you don't have to take care of others". Yay! What a great time in my life to value my individual freedom and autonomy so I can become more and more selfish and less willing to adjust to the serving that is necessary in marriage! [Read sarcasm, please!]. Of course, Christians can always bring out 1 Corinthians 7 . . . but I think most of us know that the reason we are not married is not because we are serving God better that way! I hope to elaborate further on this topic in future.

Finally, please drop over to Feminists for Life. These ladies are the type of feminists that I like.

Excitement and more excitement

Happy New Year! The past couple of weeks seem to have been a whirl of excitement for me, and the whirl will not be ending any time soon!

As if Mike and Christine's engagement BBQ was not enough excitement, the next day our friends from Texas came to visit Tasmania for the first time in ten years . . .

Dianne, Mum, Bethany, me.

The Bewshers used to live here, but moved to the USA ten years ago. I visited them in Texas three and a half years ago. It was good to meet with them and have them come around for dinner.

A couple of days after that I had to go up to Launceston (two and a half hours drive) to the school where I worked all year. We had a Presentation Night where the children performed and certificates were presented . . . a chance to say last goodbyes!

Later that week John Dekker and some other friends came for dinner and games. I invited John months ago via his blog after he posted about some of the unusual games he enjoys. We played a card game called Citadels and it was fun . . .

The next day it was my friend Christina's concert as part of the trio Eden. They played a beautiful variety of music.

Mike and Christine were there, and their adoration of the baby was obvious . . .

Afterwards we enjoyed going out for dessert.

Before we knew it, Christmas arrived. I spent a lot of time preparing for Christmas, as I decided to make Dave a scrapbook as a present and it took me longer than I expected! I kept having to put it away and get it out as well, because he kept coming to visit :). I couldn't wait to give it to him until Christmas day, Christmas eve afternoon had to do! Dave gave me a lovely necklace, which I am looking forward to wearing a lot.

We spent Christmas eve with our friends the Downes family.

Christmas day was made much more joyous by the presence of three small children . . .

and Dave . . .

One of my presents was a picnic hamper, and we recently took if for a picnic beside a river . . .

On New Year's Eve it was fun to go to church. We had an unusual service outside and we brought our dinner . . . another chance to use the hamper! It was a blessing to think about the New Year from God's perspective and pray together. Dave and I stayed up to see in the New Year, overlooking the waterfront near my home with the moon shimmering brightly.

I am now trying to have a couple of day's rest before we set out on our South African adventure. The last week has been full of lots of travel considerations! On Thursday we will be there. I do not expect to be able to post any more pictures until after we return on January 19.

Soon after arriving back I will be leaving again, this time for Sydney. This year I am commencing a Diploma of Education by correspondance, which requires an orientation session in Sydney in late January and early February. I expect the Diploma to take up much of my time this year.

The desires of our hearts

This Thursday I'd like to express thankfulness that we serve a God who delights in giving us the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37). Yesterday my friend Felicity came to visit, bearing a gift! When I opened it I was amazed at her generosity . . . and amazed that I had received just what I wanted. I have been thinking that it would be lovely to have a nativity scene, and had expressed this to several friends while Felicity was away for a few weeks in New Zealand. Little did I know that Felicity had bought me this lovely nativity scene while she was there!

I kept looking at it thinking "I can't believe she got me that! Wow!". I realise this heart's desire of mine was, in the larger picture, a small one! However, I also know that God is sovereign over even these small details of my life. This glimpse of his kindness, given to me through the kindness of a good friend, reminded me that he does give us the desires of our hearts . . . sometimes in the little things as well as the big ones!

I know that God does not always give us what we want, and I have written a lot about this in my posts about suffering. However, I also need to remember that he often does give us what we desire and even more than we asked for. No matter what is happening, we can take comfort in his sovereign care. All things, even the small ones, are under his control. Therefore it is to him we can cry out for assistance in our trials, small and large, because he can offer real help. It is also our Good Shepherd who deserves thanks when we receive the small desires of our hearts.

Happy engagement

On Friday I was excited to be able to attend Mike and Christine's engagement BBQ. It felt surreal to meet Christine, much talked about on blogs and away from them, in person. I can tell you she is really real. Others were also interested in the Mike and Christine story . . .

I also saw another important blogger at the BBQ as well. There seemed to be lots of bloggers there. Christine told me that someone asked her seriously if non-bloggers were allowed to attend! Here is John . . .

I caught him just as he saw me and exclaimed "Sherrin!". I like this picture! I figured that since John never puts pictures of himself on his blog I'd better take it upon myself to let you know what he looks like! John told me that Jessie said "hello". This temporarily threw me. "What! Where did you see her!". I was brought down to earth when he told me she said this via a comment on a blog. "Oh, that is OK!" John is also coming for dinner tomorrow night, along with some of the unusual games he featured on his blog earlier this year. Our paths also crossed yesterday when we indulged our mutual interest in civil war history by watching a 1 and a half hour documentary, along with John's brother, at the house of an elder of one of the Presbyterian churches in Hobart. I felt that I must be a very odd girl to be sitting there watching war documentaries with three men, but moving back to the point of this post . . .

Since I thought some jealous people might dispute the fact that I have met Christine, I made sure I asked for a picture with her. I felt like a dwarf when I looked at myself next to her! Christine seems like a great lady, and I look forward to getting to know her more in future.

Dave kindly accompanied me to this very blogger-filled occasion, and stayed around for many blog-filled conversations, even though he is not quite so enthusiastic about blogs as I am! He is happy for Mike and Christine, even though they did meet through blogs.

Others have also written about this important occasion on their blogs: see Jonny and Mike.

Mike and Christine forever

I am thrilled that my friend Mike's experiment in internet dating has worked out extremely successfully! Mike went to the USA in November to meet Christine, and they are now engaged! He was so sure about the relationship that he proposed three days after arriving in the USA. As I mentioned in this post, I had some misgivings about their relationship. However, I am now delighted that God is working in their lives to make them both so happy! Last week at church I plied Mike with nosy questions, and he obligingly answered all of them! How did you propose? Did you feel like you were going to fall over when you met her? . . .

Now Christine is coming to visit Tasmania, in just a few days! I am very excited about meeting her. She will be the first person I will meet in "real life" whom I have previously only known through blogging. Today I enjoyed reading Christine's story of her time with Mike in the USA. I appreciated the fact that both Christine and Mike sought her parent's approval to marry.

More party pics

On Friday night, 30 plus people crammed into my parent's living room to help me celebrate my birthday. I was blessed that they all made the effort to come out.

Here are Nick and James . . .

Talking and eating . . .

My sister Janelle, with some of the food pictured in the background. My sister is now 32 weeks pregnant with twins.

On my party invitation, I promised pictures of food and fun to those who missed out on coming. However, I forgot to photograph the food until it was almost too late . . .

We had cakes, ice cream, pies, jelly, and fruit salad. I didn't have much time to eat, with all the greetings and goodbyes that were going on. I was still eating my piece of cheese cake at 10pm!

Here I am with my friend Yvonne . . .

Here I am with Dave, after most people had left. Apparantly I look ditzy in this picture, but it is still my favourite picture of us so far.

Just like primary school

At church on Sunday night I was surprised to see my friend Mike Jolly turning around in his seat and making faces at me. I have never been to primary school, because I was home schooled, but I knew primary school conduct when I saw it. "Sherrin's got a boyfriend ha ha ha". Mike had clearly read my Officially unsingle post. Since I was sitting next to Dave, the temptation to tease obviosuly overcame Mike. I made faces right back. The only thing to do, really. The next time Mike made faces at me I studiously looked ahead, concentrating on the sermon. I decided such immature conduct as Mike's was beneath me. Now Mike is teasing me on my own blog. Scandalous. Thankfully I don't mind, as he well knows.

While Mike may occasionally seem immature, I have actually seen him display a lot of maturity in recent times. Shortly after Mike made faces at me, there was an extended open prayer time in the church service. Mike said two great prayers.

Another way he demonstrated maturity was in his response to my concerns about his serious online dating relationship with Christine, which he wrote of
here. I was concerned about Mike giving up his whole heart and soul to someone he had never met, so I told him so. I figured that since I'd already expressed this concern to several friends, I'd better tell the man himself. Mike displayed maturity when he listened to what I said.

I am still somewhat concerned about Mike being so in love with someone he has never met, but I know that Mike is seeking God. Our Father in heaven is in the habit of caring for his people, including Mike and Christine. As they seek him, they will be able to overcome whatever obstacles they face. Even if the worst case scenario I have been known to contemplate does happen, they will be secure in God's love and he will enable them to grow closer to him. They meet next month, and I am looking forward to hearing about it!

Birthday Party

I had a birthday party on Friday night. It was a fun time with lots of friends! Packing 30 people into my parent's living room was a challenge, but everyone seemed to have a good time.

Here I am with Sam Downes. The Downes family loves to tease me about how much I like pink, so their present was all pink! I think Sam, 15, must have been embarassed to be seen presenting such a gift.

Inside the pink bag, it was fun to discover pink sparkling grape juice. There was also a cute grey bear in a pink t-shirt, six light pink glasses, pink straws, and pink napkins. I am very glad I decided not to wear pink to my party!

Here are friends Ruth and Camille Peacock drinking the pink juice out of pink glasses on our pink couch!

Here are some of my presents. I was amazed at what I received from my kind friends over the past week. Three vases (all very different to each other), a Royal Albert plate with pink roses and a scalloped edge, patchwork in a frame, cups, a serving platter, soaps (including baby soap which is allegedly for my hope chest!), a muffin tin, roses from Dave, chocolates, a t-shirt, hair clips, and more.

I am planning to post more pictures soon. The fact that I have posted about presents first does not mean I consider them the most important thing about my birthday or my party :)! I just love the pictures of my pink gifts, so I had to put them up first!

Dinner with Christina and Margaret

On the same weekend I visited Clarendon, I was also blessed to have dinner with my friends Margaret and Christina Sonnemann. I do not see Margaret and Christina often, but whenever I do it is fantastic. We talk rapidly about everything from travel to home schooling, the Puritans to birth control, our family and friends to the books we have recently read, history to our jobs.

Christina and Margaret with our meal

I talk to Margaret and Christina about things I don't talk to most people about. This is because we have large areas of agreement with each other. We have also read about similar ideas so we don't "miss each other" in what we are saying. Christina and I were both home shcooled, so we know the inside talk that comes with that territory! When we don't agree, it is always in a way that is helpful rather than frustrating and pointless! I usually go away refreshed and challenged. This time I was challenged to trust in God more, and not to worry about future scenarios.

Our food was also fun. It was the first time for all of us to try "Tapas". Apparantly it has been the rage in other parts of our country and the world for years, but we are behind the times! The idea is that you are served lots of little dishes to try. I tried everything except the lamb (my history of being a vegetarian makes anything on a bone a little hard to take). It was all delicious. We also had a yummy dessert each. White chocolate and berry cake for me, which was melt in the mouth fantastic :).

Thanks for a great evening, Christina and Margaret! I look forward to the next time we spend together.

A quarter of a century

Today is my 25th birthday. This means, as my friend Ruth has mentioned several times, I have now lived a quarter of a century! On occasions like this, I often think more about the many blessings I have enjoyed in my years under the sun. These are blessings that can easily be taken for granted, but which many people must do without. For example: two parents, enough food and water every day of my life, trees, fresh air, and access to education.

So far 18 people have let me know they are coming to my over a hill birthday party. I expect there will be a few more. I am looking forward to seeing people I haven't had contact with for a while. I don't know if I am looking forward to all the baking I'll need to do tomorrow and Friday, but I am sure it will be fun once I start!

I have also received lovely messages from friends because of my special day, which started last week. I am reminded to be grateful that people are thinking of me and they do care. As J. D. Salinger said: "I am a kind of paranoiac in reverse. I suspect people of plotting to make me happy." I think God is in on the conspiracy as well.

Tahune Airwalk

Way back in my holiday from work (or vacation if you are an American), I visited the Tahune Airwalk with some friends. You can check out the web site here. As usual, it has taken me over a month to post pictures - seven weeks, to be exact! Here they are . . .

Sam, Dave, and Genevieve beside the Huon River.

Goodbye, dear friend

Today my friend Hunnah leaves for Sydney, where here husband is taking up a new job. Hunnah has been a good friend for many years. She was kind to me in my first year of school, when I was not yet a Christian, and has been a faithful friend ever since. Our circumstances have greatly changed over those years, and we have shared many events. We now share fellowship in the Lord, and that is more important than anything. Thank you Hunnah for many years of kind words, discussions about the Bible and the Christian life, support, and love. I trust that we will have many more years of fellowship ahead, even if it is less frequent and from a much greater distance! May God bless your new life in Sydney.

Lunch with friends

Here are a few pictures of the friends I had over to lunch two weeks ago. I am grateful to everyone for coming and helping to make it a happy afternoon. My parents enjoyed visiting with my friends as well.

After eating the savoury part of our meal, we went outside for a walk around my parents' property. Everyone was curious about the orange fruit on some of our trees, especially since was mid-winter. Some thought that the fruit resembled small pumpkins hanging from a tree! They are actually persimmons. I asked Dad to explain what they are. Then most people tried one. I'm sorry to say that no one expressed a great liking for them! All the more for Dad to eat, I guess!

Sam Downes made great friends with Puss, which amazed us! We began to think she should be adopted to a more loving home. The Downes family love animals. We like Puss, but that is not the same as love. We scarcely ever hold her. Sam held her all afternoon. What is more, she liked it! When I try to hold her she always jumps away. Perhaps she knows the touch of true love when she feels it, and Sam has that touch!

Here I am with all my guests except one, who was so exhausted from a Christian camp that she had to lie down for a sleep in the guest bed!

L to R: Josh, Sam, Dave, Sherrin, Amanda, Felicity, Shiloh.

This gathering was more work than those I wrote of here. It was more work because I wanted to make succotash. This is one of the few new dishes I've learnt since starting work in Launceston (perhaps the only one). It is a thick soup with corn, beans, pumpkin and capsicum in it. Since I wanted to have this I ended up having three courses: soup and rolls, then mains and salad, then dessert (after a long walk around the garden). At my other gatherings I only had two courses, which is obviously less work. I enjoyed preparing all the food though. It was fun to have the time to cook, because I was on holiday.

As I often say or think, most things that are worthwhile involve hard work! I found the afternoon very worthwhile, and I'd love to have people over again soon! As usual when I extend hospitality, I was blessed with a fun time. Isn't it great that the Bible's words that it is "more blessed to give than to receive" are true in practice, and that we find ourselves blessed when we serve others and obey God?

Travels with a new friend

I have made one new friend in Launceston, Praise God. I made friends with Ruth when she gave me a lift down to Hobart one weekend. I work with Ruth, she is a Teacher's Aide and secretary at the school, but I did not get to know her much until we travelled together down to Hobart. A two and a half hour trip is a good time to find out whether or not you enjoy someone's company!

After that, one day she invited me to go on a day trip with her to see more around Launceston. We went for a drive beside the Tamar River . . .

I thought Auld Kirk Sidmouth, pictured below, would be the ideal place to be buried! It is a Presbyterian church.

Here is Ruth at Perth during one of our stops on the trip to Hobart. People who travel with me always have to stop for a few minutes every half hour to let me out for a little walk to help my back pain (when I'm on the bus I just get up and walk the aisle). Ruth made these little stops lots of fun!

It was also fun in Ross, where we stopped at a lolly shop. I bought an ice cream, which seemed a good way to celebrate the start of winter! It was early in June. I wore trousers that day just to prove to Ruth that I do wear trousers sometimes! She had asked me one day at work if I ever do! It is in our contract that we must wear skirts to work, so I don't have any choice there, but I wear skirts a lot anyway.

Yvonne and Owen

In Launceston a few weeks ago it was a joy to meet with friends from Hobart! I am lonely up in Launceston. I cried when I couldn't find them at the place we were supposed to meet! It all ended happily ever after though, as we did find each other!

Yvonne diagnosed me with homesickness and recommended some remedies, which I have not yet followed. I have been at home for a week though, which helps. It was a great blessing to go to my own church last night, even if I did have to leave earlier than I wanted to (my cough was bad).

When I met with Yvonne and Owen in Launceston, we spent most of our time talking about the Bible's teaching on money. I think we agree that Christians should be extremely generous, but we should also save and care for our families. As usual in our conversations though, we got to this point via many seeming disagreements that were not really disagreements. Yvonne and I always seem to come at things from different angles and get lost somewhere in the middle. Isn't it great that we're still such good friends? Yvonne says that it is a testimony to the power of Christ to unite us. We agree about far more than we disagree on, and our "disagreements" have become something of a joke.

Yvonne is passionate about the world's poor. She recently did a post on fair trade chocolate and cocoa.

Here are some verses that seem to go well with our conversation in Launceston:

"The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and all the things which are rich and splendid have gone from you, and you shall find them no more at all.

"The merchants of these things, who became rich by her, will stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing.

"and saying, 'Alas, alas, that great city that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!

"For in one hour such great riches came to nothing.

Revelation 18:14-19a.

I can't wait to meet up with Yvonne again in the North!

Memories of Friends

“Those we hold dear never truly leave us. They live on in the kindnesses they showed, the comfort they shared, and the love they brought into our lives” - Isabel Norton. When I first came across this quote I thought of my dear Grandad. A sincere Christian, former missionary to New Guinea, carpenter, and ardent creationist, Grandad was a big part of our lives for many years. He would often come to our house to work in our large garden, or on renovations. In his last years he lived on our property in a caravan. When he died during 2002 he left memories everywhere, in the things he had made. The extensions to rooms in our house, the ornate three storey dolls house, the bulbs planted near his caravan, the hope chest with a star on it made out of different woods, and the coffee table in our living room.

Later on I thought of those who have left for other reasons, even deliberately. I took out a watercolour picture that had been stored away for years. A dear friend gave it to me. We were both homeschooled, and spent time together for many years. We loved to stay over at one another’s homes, and shared interests like old novels and crafts. A few months before my eighteenth birthday, she was the driver in a car accident where I sustained a crush fracture to my spine. The constant pain from this, even close to seven years later, has changed my life dramatically. My friend struggled to cope with her role in the accident. Her response was to withdraw. She wrongly thought we would not want her in our lives anymore. Shortly after the accident, I was converted to Christ. My friend continued to rebel. We grew even further apart. I had not only lost a measure of my body’s freedom. I had lost a dear friend. The injury was an accident. The loss of friendship was a choice, and it seemed harder to forgive. Tears still come to my eyes as I write about that time.

When friends fail, there is a choice. Become bitter, or learn to remember love, comfort and kindness. A choice for bitterness leads to jaded memories. Twenty years after hurts occurred, many people still pour out the slights, harsh words, and broken promises. Memories of joy and blessings have faded away. With God’s help to forgive and heal, the opposite can be true. Gratitude for what the person gave for a season can be focused upon. The sharing of hearts and lives was precious. The relationship was not pointless. Focusing on the good imparts the courage to continue to invest in friendships and trust people. If hurt results, and even the end of the friendship, there will be good memories left as well. So I keep on my bookshelf a small watercolour picture of a woman running across green grass beside a pond. She is wearing a long blue dress, with a straw hat falling off behind her. I look at it and remember the many people who were once my friends. This, I hope, is not mere sentimentality. It is gratitude for memories of kindness and comfort, for memories of friends.

Tis the Season to be Wedded . . .

I attended one wedding on 3 December, one on 14 January, and another on 4 February. It is wedding season again.

The last wedding I went to included a reception at the bride's parents' house near a beach. Guests were encouraged to bring mats or chairs and sit on the lawn.

The bride and groom.

Kerri and Yvonne enjoying the unusual event of warm water in Tasmania.

After last week's picture of Yvonne, it seemed a good idea to put up a "sensible" picture of her on my blog as well!

At the reception, about seven different ice cream flavours were available in either a cone or a cup. There was also sandwiches and fruit salad. It was fun to participate in this unusual reception. It seemed like a celebration of the personalities of the couple, as well as their life long committment to each other!
